We are a passenger, logistics and maintenance service company owned by the Finnish state, and we increase the popularity of environmentally friendly rail and city traffic.
The first quarter of 2024 was challenging for VR's business operations. Our profitability was affected by long-lasted strikes, fleet issues as well as increased costs caused by an unusually long period of freezing temperatures and significant track damage. Despite these challenges, we steadfastly continue to implement our strategy and accelerate the company’s turnaround with improved competitiveness.
The sustainability collaboration between the companies is taking a significant step forward as VR commits to using as much renewable diesel in its rail traffic as is consumed by UPM Plywood’s transport of plywood from the Pellos plant to Kouvola and Kotka. This is VR’s first HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) concept for rail logistics, whereby emissions from customer transports in the Scope 1 emission class* are reduced to almost zero.
VR-Group Plc is acquiring the long-distance traffic business of MTR Nordic AB's Swedish subsidiary MTR Express (Sweden) AB (MTRX). VR has been operating in Sweden since 2022. With this acquisition, the company's operations will expand in the Swedish passenger transport market from regional contracted services to long-distance traffic. The transaction requires approval from the Swedish competition authority.
In 2023, VR’s long-distance traffic included over 15 million journeys, which is an all-time record. The 14 per cent increase from the previous year was due to the increased popularity of business and work travel mainly on weekdays, as well as free-time travel.
